Preface to When Science met God…

PREFACE

Albert Einstein’s words ‘The most incomprehensible thing about this universe is – IT IS COMPREHENSIBLE’ sends waves of awe and gratitude in every cell of my being, every moment of my life! Comprehension of anything at all, feels like the greatest miracle! Einstein confessed to have constantly combined and recombined ideas, images, and other various thoughts into millions of different combinations. He referred to his thinking process as “combinatory play.” In Einstein’s famous equation, E=mc2, he did not invent the concepts of energy, mass, or speed of light. He simply found a connecting thread to combine these concepts in a novel way which restructured the way humanity looks at the universe.

I am no scientist, I have no formal degrees in scientific research. In fact, when my daughter went to grade 6 in 2007, my mother casually told her as part of a conversation, ‘Don’t be like your mother and avoid Science!’ Something within me whimpered. Was I incapable of understanding scientific thought? After a year of self learning, reading every scientific journal written for the non-scientist, on 24th August 2008, I sat and wrote four articles back to back and mailed them all to my revered Guru Mahatria, diviner of the path infinitheism. Within a few hours I got a reply

Dear Gita,

Read your article on ‘When science met God’ with a smile.  Not just this article, so much about you and thoughts of you brings a smile on my face.  Like Science and God – not everybody will understand you and those who do cannot but cherish you.

Loving you so much.

Mahatria

We began publishing the articles as a series in the international growth magazine infinithoughts. Eight years of publishing (2007 to 2014), sixty seven articles under the series, each exploring another avenue of human intellectual pursuit, loads of research, hundreds of insights and scores of reader feedbacks, encouraged me to keep exploring – in inexplicable ways, this series has helped me evolve.

As I mentioned, I am not a scientist. Neither am I a philosopher. I took to meditation in 2002 when I met my Guru Mahatria and over the years through repeated experiences, learnt to differentiate between hallucination and spiritual experiences. My head and heart compete with each other to both understand and experience, to analyse and wonder, to define and dissolve… While it is not easy to speak with any authority on scientific thoughts that need validations from humanity as a whole, it is even more challenging to share spiritual experiences in today’s ethos of charlatan claims. It is far easier to simply remain silent. But this book make no claims on special knowledge or extraordinary skills.

I have merely identified apparently unconnected areas of knowledge and experience, wandered and explored each of them and allowed them to flow into each other’s domains to find new creative dialogues weaving patterns within abstractions. It is not a prescription of what it is or should be, but rather a description of a duet between my mind and my heart dancing in awe, unfettered by the conditioned limitations of human constructs. As I began this romance with scientific knowledge and spiritual experiences, the differences have disappeared; new expression grounds have begun to unfold…

Introduction

Hi God! They call me Science

Man believes I’m his baby

Just as you said he would.

‘Eureka’ he screams

When he glimpses Thee

Yet makes it a theory

Filing it under me

Every apple’s fall

Has a place in history

Yet I am called witness

Only when they feel Thee

They thought Thou were energy

Physical things mere mass

Till you made them equate the two

Placing the laurels on me

They believed in particles

And in wave patterns

You showed them they are interchangeable

Now I reign supreme

Uncertainty prompted Quantum theories

Studies in consciousness

Cloning techniques

Technological innovations

Quantum leaps

Travel into space

Atomic energy

Genetic re-engineering

Stem-cell therapy

The list is endless

The potential infinite

Absolute knowledge

They seek from me!

A whirl-wind romance

They have had with me

Little do they realise

I lead them to Thee!

Isn’t it time, Father

To make them see

I am Thy child

Every atom holds Thee!

From the Big Bang to the Big Crunch

And the Theory Of Everything

When will they be ready

To see Thy unity?

When science with all its laudable accomplishments met God for a dialogue in my mind’s eye,

their discussion went like this…
